Abbé Henri Breuil (1877-1962), who has been called "the father of pre- history," was one of the leading paleontologists in the world and for decades the foremost expert on prehistoric cave paintings.27 Abbé Georges Lemaître (1894-1966) was one of the originators of the Big Bang Theory, along with Alexander Friedmann.28 Fr.
The evi- dence for this "Big Bang Theory" has become so strong in the last thirty years that it is no longer seriously questioned.
What made the Big Bang Theory unpleasant for some people, I suspect, is that it took away that answer.
In the words of the cosmologist Andrei Linde, "The nonstationary char- acter of the Big Bang theory [based on the] Friedmann cosmological models seemed very unpleasant to many scientists in the 1950s."8 As late as 1959, a sur- vey of leading American astronomers and physicists found that two-thirds of them believed that the universe had no beginning.9 This was forty-three years after Einstein's equations were discovered, and thirty years after Hubble and Humason's results.
There can be no question that the aversion that some scientists felt for the Big Bang Theory stemmed largely from philosophical prejudices, and in par- ticular to the fact that the reality of a beginning seemed to sit much better with religious views than with their own materialism.10
